The Department of Biological Sciences Outreach program had a big role in the 2010 Spring SciTech Festival. SciTech is an annual science festival at the Carnegie Sceince Center, featuring presentations, exhibits, and hands-on activities and connects visitors with leading scientists and technologists in a fun, dynamic atmosphere.

Marcie Warner with the Gene Team had a demonstration of C. elegans and its importance in research. Visitors were able to observe several different worms with the help of microscopes, including some marked with GFP (Green Fluorescent Protein) that made them glow.

Outbreak! is a simulated response to a possible new disease outbreak.

Visitors were able to take an active role in the investigation using virtual tools to explore advanced biological techniques, including cell culturing, electron microscopy and DNA separation.
